Once home to Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, The Hermitage has been restored and opened to the public in order to provide a living record of life and culture in the early 19th century. The visitors center offers informational materials including a short introductory video and museum-grade exhibits on the property and its residents, including the slaves who were kept to farm and maintain the 1,100 acre plantation. After touring the exhibits, visitors can take a guided tour of the mansion, led by workers in period garb, and stroll through the manicured gardens which surround the residence. The property is about 12 miles northeast of Nashville in the suburb of Hermitage.
